The annual Trophonia festivities are held each September by the Municipality of Livadeia. The festivities include a series of cultural events over a period of 20 days in total. The events include concerts, shows or artistic and historical features. Most of them take place in the open stone theater in the area of Krya, Livadeia. The natural location of the theater under the stars is ideal for this kind of events. Its excellent acoustics also makes it possible for the artists to perfectly demonstrate their craft.
The festival has taken its name from god Trophonius who was worshiped in the region throughout the antiquity. The Trophonius oracle was one of the most important oracles in the Greek region and is specifically being mentioned in the works of Pausanias. The oracle was open up until the 5th century A.D., however its exact location has yet to be found. Nevertheless it is certain that Trophonius was the local god hence the name of the festival.
PINDAREIA IN THEBES
Each summer, the municipality of Thebes is steeped in culture through the hosting of the Pindareia festivities by the Municipality of Thebes. The festivities include art exhibitions, concerts, theater plays and dancing and musical events. Events from other cities – very often from the capital – are also hosted. The inhabitants of the region as well as the children take part in many of the locally organized events. Most of the festivities take place on the Thebes central square as well as in the “Melina Merkouri” municipal theatre in Moschopodi. The annual Pindareia festival takes place every August and attracts many visitors from all over the country.
