On East Central Greece and really close to the capital city, Boeotia Prefecture belongs to the areas with the longest history in the whole country. It combines the beauty of the mountainous landscape with coastal villages, and provides a variety of choices for entertainment during all seasons of the year.

The capital of Boeotia, Livadeia, built on the west side of the Prefecture, is at the foot of Mount Helicon, and River Erkynas flows through it. In the bright green landscape, Livadeia played a major role in the period of the Revolution. Picturesque and loyal to tradition Livadeia is ideal for walks.

The area has been inhabited since the prehistoric period, as it results from the works of Pausanias and Thucydides. Closely related to mythology, the rich history of Boeotia is also obvious in the monuments and the museums that exist in every area of the prefecture. Archaeological sites and castles, ideal for a time travel, as well as monuments from the recent history offer this area a special cultural character.

Boeotia is of intense cultural interest. Every year, cultural events of many days are held and artists from the whole country are invited. The people’s interest in arts is obvious from the variety of groups and cultural bodies that are activated in the area.

Boeotians remain loyal to local traditions by reviving the customs of the area every year. The traditional Easter holiday in Livadeia, the carnival customs and the village festivals bring the Boeotians closer to their past.

Boeotia offers possibilities for many sport activities, through the sport facilities of all kinds. The annual running event “Lap of Kadmeia” gathers all the lovers of athletics who take part despite the adverse weather condition of December.

As for nature lovers, Boeotia offers many destinations, and among them, Arachova, the most popular winter destination in Greece. On Mount Parnassus there are many mountaineering shelters as well as snow- activities. For those who prefer excursions to the sea, the coasts of the Corinthian and the Euboean Gulf combine their natural beauty with the closer archaeological sites. The landscape is unique!
