The county of Viotia belongs to the Region of Sterea Hellas. Geographically it is located at the centre of Sterea Hellas Region. The county of Viotia borders to its west with the county of Fokida, to its north with the county of Fthiotida, while to its east, with the county of Attica and the bay of Evoikos.
According to the census realized in 2001, the population of the county today reaches the number of 123.913 inhabitants and geographically it covers 2952 km2. The capital of the county is the city of Levadia, with approximately 30.000 inhabitants and the second largest urban centre is the city of Thiva.
Geographical elements – Ground Morphology
Viotia consists of fertile and plain land mostly. Its mountainous part is small. More specifically, the ground of the county can be distinguished in categories as follows:
- 40% plain land,
- 38% semi-mountainous and
- 22% mountainous land
The wider plain lands are those of Thiva, Heronia and Kopaida (created after the drainage of the homonymous lake). Viotia’s plain lands are being traversed by small rivers, the most important of which are those of Asopos, Kifisos, Libadostras, Mornos and Melas. The County possesses two lakes, Yliki and Paralimni, which end up in Marathonas. The flat grounds of Viotia are surrounded by the mountains: Elikonas (the highest top 1.748m.), Kithaironas (1.409 m.), Parnassos (2.400 m.), Neraidolakkoma (1.678 m.), Massapio (1.201 m.) and Chlomo (1.081 m.) The County of Viotia is getting wet to each one of its coasts by two bays, Korinthian and Evoikos.
